Levels of Play
Please pay attention to the league descriptions as they have changed. All our leagues have levels of competition, and encourage you to be social, so we have modified the division names. Players and teams may be modified or asked to change leagues depending on sign ups and experience level.
- Red League - If you have never played dodgeball or it's been a while, are focused on recreation and fun rather than scores, or have a low to medium understanding of the basic rules and skills, the red league is for you! This league is meant for a casual experience, for those who want to get back into this sport every once in a while or try it for the first time. Players in this league will generally have some knowledge of the game but probably need common reminders about the specifics here and there. It is understood that abilities will vary and hopefully grow over the season (though not required). The priority is to get your body moving a bit, get a little better each time from where you began, and have slower paced, low stakes games.
- Average Skills for the Red League:
- Some familiarity with the game but likely hasn't played much or at all since school, or ever. May have participated in a few Stonewall Sports seasons
- Ball throwing at various levels, with low to medium speed, distance, and accuracy
- Varying dodging and catching ability, may or may not be consistent
- Blue League - If you have played dodgeball with Stonewall or another league several times, have been on teams that have been at the top of our past social leagues, and/or are confident in your athletic ability but may not have all the dodgeball skills down pat perfectly, blue league is for you! This league is meant for a more involved game experience, for those who know dodgeball pretty well and can decently hold their own on the court. Players in this league will know the cadence of the game well and be generally be familiar with deflections, live/dead/zombie ball rules, and some team strategies, striving to win and play fairly fast paced games. If you're wanting to push yourself but not ready for fully advanced play, the blue league is a great choice.
- Average Skills for the Blue League:
- Players likely have played dodgeball more recently and frequently
- Ball throwing at medium to high speed, able to aim more reliably at their opponents
- Can catch, deflect, and/or dodge more than half of the balls thrown their way at medium to high speed
- Are actively keeping tabs on the locations of their other teammates, opponents, and dodgeballs
- Have developed some situational awareness and ability to strategize/communicate actively with teammates during the matches
- Yellow League -If you are confident with the rules, have mastery over the basic and advanced skills of dodgeball, played on multiple adult leagues, or have had demonstrated consistent wins over most other teams, competitive is for you! These are high-paced games meant for those who want an ever bigger challenge and the most movement, or who have cleared the previous levels and are starting to become more advanced. Players in this league generally are prepared with standard dodgeball strategies and tactics, have a track record of being able to play well consistently, and have a burning fire to win. From those of you who have cleared the ranks of other Stonewall leagues to those of you eager to jump in and play hard, yellow league eagerly awaits you!
- Average Skills for the Yellow League:
- Players can throw quickly, from almost anywhere on their side of the court to almost anywhere on the other side of the court
- Can catch, deflect, and/or dodge most of the balls thrown their way, even at high speeds and with faster response times
- Aiming to the level of accuracy of body parts on opponents
- Consistently are thinking about game strategy, ball control, working with who is on the court and analyzing the opponent
Shirts
As part of our mission to keep programs affordable, to save on space and waste, and per your feedback we got in 2025, we will be moving to a one Stonewall Shirt per year system. If this is your first event of the year, you will get your shirt at this program, and will be asked to bring it for any other leagues you play in for 2026. If you'd like to order an extra one, please reach out to slc.operations@stonewallsports.org.
How to Sign Up
- I plan to create a team: If you plan to create a team you will need to register as a team captain first. Then you can tell your friends to register as a team player and join your team. PLEASE BE ADVISED - Incomplete teams will be merged with other incomplete teams or have free agents added - we cannot have low stacked teams as it takes away spots from other interested people.
- I plan to join a team: If you already know with which team you are going to play on, you will need to register as a team player. Keep in mind that you can't randomly join any team; captains may ask that a player be removed from their team prior to the close of registration. We encourage that you discuss with each other what teams and players you intend on joining. Captains can email slc.operations@stonewallsports.org to move players onto/off their teams. Players may be added to incomplete teams based on registration quantities in order to give the most people the chance to play.
- I want to play with another player or players, but our group isn't enough to make a full team: Also totally doable. Please sign up as a Small Group Member, and in the registration details, follow the instructions to make a Small Group and enter the name of the person you want to play with when the form asks you to. You'll get placed on a team either with another small group, a team that needs more players or several free agents!
- I want to play but I don't have a team/don't have someone specific I want to play with: That's fantastic! This league is about making new friends! Register as a Free Agent. We will do our best to balance teams and help make it a fun time! You can always reach out
Player Fund
We're happy to formally launch our player fund program. If you or someone you know would like to participate in this program but can't because of cost, we are building a player fund to be able to partially or fully help offset the cost of registration for a portion of our registered players per program. The amount and quantity of Player Fund Awards for each program will vary based on demand and available funds, and for now we are limiting one player fund award per person per year, unless there are extra unused funds.
Apply for the player fund here: https://forms.gle/BHBovJozvJqDmHyEA
For questions about the fund, please email slc.operations@stonewallsports.org
Rules of the Game
Teams face off against their opponents on opposite sides of the court. The objective is to get opponent players out with the dodgeballs while staying in. Once one team has eliminated all players on the other side, that team scores a point. The team with the most points at the end of the match wins. A more detailed rulebook will be sent to all registered players
Game Basics
- Games are 55 minutes long, with 2 halves and a halftime break
- Dodgeballs will be placed on the center line at the beginning of each game. When the whistle blows, you may run to the center line and bring them behind your attack line to begin throwing
- There is a maximum of 10 players allowed on the court at once.
- When you are called out, exit the court through the back of your half of the court and line up on the side of the court in the order you were out.
- If a teammate catches a ball, the first person in line may re-enter the court and go back into play, only if there are less than 10 players currently on the court.
- You may deflect a ball thrown at you with another ball you are holding
- If there are more than 10 players in attendance, swap in and out each new game - no one should start out more than once in a row.
- Referees will watch the plays and make calls. Please listen to their calls and be respectful, talk to your captain if there's a dispute
- A live ball is a dodgeball that has been thrown by a player and has not become a dead ball
- A dead ball is a dodgeball that has been thrown and then hit the ground, a wall, the ceiling, or has gone out of bounds. Not when it hits a player
- Mercy rule - if at any point during the match, one team's score is 10 points greater than the other, the mercy rule will be called and the score will be locked there. The teams will be given the option to mix teams and continue for the rest of their time with more balanced teams, playing for fun and practice.
How you can get Out
- You, your hair or your clothing are hit with a dodgeball, and then the ball becomes a dead ball
- You throw a ball, and an opponent catches it
- You are holding a ball, and an opponent throws a second ball into the one you are holding, causing you to lose control of it.
- You throw a ball, an opponent deflects it and another player catches it
