Leagues

Levels of Play

We offer four divisions so you can compete where it's most fun for you. Read the descriptions carefully and pick the one that fits your actual experience — if you're unsure, err on the side of casual. Players and teams may be asked to adjust leagues based on total sign-ups and play level.

🦄 Unicorn League — Beginner / Recreational

If you have never played sand volleyball, are focused on recreation and fun rather than scores, or have a low to medium understanding of the basic rules and skills, the Unicorn League is for you! This league is meant for a casual experience — for those who want to get back into this sport every once in a while or try it for the first time. The priority is to get your body moving, socialize with your team and other players, and have fun, casual games.

  • Some knowledge of the game and basic skills for hitting the ball over the net and passing to teammates, with varying success
  • Abilities will vary and hopefully grow over the season (though not required)
  • Low-stakes, casual pacing — no pressure to master technique

🧜 Mermaid League — Some Experience / Intermediate (B, B+)

If you are familiar with the rules, have played one or two volleyball leagues with Stonewall or in the past, and are getting more consistent in your skills with an eye for low to medium-stakes but challenging games, the Mermaid League is for you! If you're more than a beginner but still feeling like your volleyball successes come and go, this one's for you.

  • Good grasp of basic and technical rules of the game
  • Able to reliably serve and keep the ball in bounds
  • Can bump, set, and spike with decent aim; can usually keep a rally going, though results may vary

🔥 Phoenix League — Intermediate (BB, BB+)

If you are very familiar with the rules, are confident in your volleyball skills, have had demonstrated success over teams in previous social leagues, while still not quite at the speed and intensity of the highest level of play, the Phoenix League is for you! If you're wanting to push yourself and don't mind rising from the ashes, this is a great choice.

  • Reliable ball control, aim, and court movement
  • Thinking about different strategies and placements
  • Working toward (but not yet at full mastery of) bumping, setting, spiking, blocking, and serving

🐉 Dragon League — Advanced (A, AA)

If you are confident with the rules, have mastery over the basic and advanced skills of volleyball, played in high school or college teams, or have had demonstrated wins over previous intermediate teams, Dragon League is for you! These are high-paced, advanced games for those who want the biggest challenge and the most movement. If you're confident in your skills and ready for our most advanced league — sign up.

  • Mastery of basic and advanced volleyball skills
  • High athleticism and standard volleyball strategies and tactics
  • High school, college, or equivalent competitive background
  • Note: If you are at AAA level or top amateur/bottom pro, you may find this organization too casual — but all participation is encouraged

Registration

How to Sign Up

👑 Captains

If you plan on being the captain of a team, you will need to register first and then have players register under your team name. An email will be sent with additional team information and responsibilities as captain. Captains and Co-Captains are also required to attend a Captains meeting!

🤝 Players

I plan to create a team: Register as Team Captain (see above), then tell your friends to register as Team Players and join your team name. Please note — incomplete teams will be merged with other incomplete teams or have free agents added. We cannot have low-stacked teams as it takes away spots from other interested players.

I plan to join a team: Register as a Team Player and select your captain's team. Keep in mind that captains may ask that a player be removed from their team prior to the close of registration. Captains can email slc.sports@stonewallsports.org to move a player — but only after communicating with the player directly. If your team isn't full by the time registration closes, we may add players to fill it and give more people room to play.

🙋 Free Agent — No team? No problem.

That's fantastic! This league is about making new friends! Register as a Free Agent and we'll do our best to put friends of friends on the same teams and make sure they're fair.

Common Questions

FAQ

Do I need experience to join?
Nope. Our Social league is designed exactly for beginners and people returning to the sport. If you can hit a ball over a net, you're ready.
When does the season run?
The season runs July 31 – October 9, 2026 — 10 weeks of Friday night play. No games on September 11th.
How do I know which league level to choose?
Read the level descriptions above carefully — they have changed from previous seasons. If you're unsure, start in Social. Players and teams may be adjusted between leagues based on total sign-ups and actual play level.
Can I register as a group or team?
Yes! One person registers as Team Captain and the rest register as Team Players under that team name. Just make sure your team is complete — incomplete teams will be filled or merged.
What should I bring?
Sunscreen, water, athletic clothes, and your season t-shirt for games. Sand volleyball is played barefoot or in sand socks — no cleats or hard-soled shoes on the court.
Is there a post-game social?
Almost always! Teams typically head somewhere after games — it's honestly one of the best parts of the season.
What's included with registration?
Your registration covers your season t-shirt (one per year — bring it to all 2026 programs), court rental, and equipment. Just show up ready to play.
⚡ Early Bird ends July 10

Register by Jul 10 for the lowest rate — $50/player. Regular pricing kicks in Jul 11, late registration begins Jul 21.
